Reed and Barton: The Fine Art of Sterling Design (original title: Romance of Silver Design) c.1959
Kenneth and Shirley Richter produced this promotional film for Reed & Barton. Although undated, it features scenes of John (Jack) Prip working at the factory (he was there from 1957 to 1961) and Gio Ponti designing what became the Diamond pattern which was introduced in 1958. R&B Design Director Theodore Cayer is also featured.
Collector and design historian Elliot Taillon contributed this useful additional observation: "I think it’s c. 1964, Tapestry pattern featured in it came out in 1964, but English Provincial and Spanish Baroque, both 1965, were absent. Grand Renaissance and Diadem, both 1967, were also absent. Savannah would have been the next newest, introduced 1962." So perhaps filmed through 1961, augmented and edited through 1964?
The original 16 mm film is in the collection of the Harvard Baker Business Library, all copies undated.

Designing Barbie: Manufacturing, Materials, and Miscalculations
Переглядів 4,2 тис.10 місяців тому
Sure, Barbie is a cultural icon and scores of books could be (and have been) written about what she MEANS. And you could probably even decide to make a huge Hollywood blockbuster about her. But she is WAY more interesting as a manufactured object with a lot to tell us about how design works. And how it doesn't.
A Look at Cutting Gemstones (A Postscript to the Tiffany Diamond Feather Saga)

I would absolutely trade away the modern blow molded coffee lid. the amount of trash for a single use item and I would personally enjoy a resurgence in the coffee shop as a third place and not a stop off point to get a shot of caffeine.

The thing about silk worms not existing in the wild anymore isn't true-- there are other types of silk producing moths that still exist in the wild. (Especially in India). But they're distinct.

Hi Matthew, as an Indonesian designer who experienced ID student life under Covid, I found my formative student years to be excruciatingly dull, and graduated in 2022 with dissappointment of my study, continuing to the auto industry and being displeased with it almost in the same manner of my own study. I'm extremely grateful to stumble upon your desperate videos in 2020 to hook your students, and have my horizon widened by binge watching all 12-week videos in an attempt to rekindle my relationship with the broader ID field and its rich history. I can't thank you enough for bringing knowledge and inspiring, even ten thousand miles away. A history lesson only an et ceterator could make!

Why did they get rid of the holes in the feet stand? I get improvements but getting rid of the stand is crazy to me all the flimsy stands they just seam to get worse by the year. The holes in the feet stand are perfect I love when I get a reproduction doll that has that stand! ❤❤

The luckhardt st14 chair looks like the supports were pinned or riveted. It's hard to tell, but there's that small circle where it looks like corrosion is in the gap, and also because the end of the fastner is flush.

People think it's difficult to make symmetrical models in 1990's, think about the temples in India that had perfect symmetry which are sculpted out of stone and are made in a huge scale, all my respect to the Temple Builders

I’ve just watched this last chapter in your course. And probably the most important things I’ll take away from it are excitement for all the ideas you’ve shared and optimism for everything that lies ahead. I can’t thank you enough for sharing your work and the connections you’ve made among otherwise disparate people and objects as you’ve described a trajectory for the evolution of design as a practice. You’ve given us a lot to think about this world of products and services in which we live. And you’ve given me, personally, a renewed excitement about how and where I can contribute to it. I wish there were some way to repay your efforts. (Seriously: a Patreon site, a book, tee shirts … coffee mugs … everyone loves coffee mugs)
